Sometimes the story behind the novel can be a source of interest. With this in mind I decided to write an occasional blog explaining the background to one of my published books. The first describes how this compilation of short stories with a fellow author came about.
After the publication of my first book, my niece insisted I needed a presence on Social Media and my Voinks Facebook author page was born. To fill the space, I began writing short stories and eventually joined various readers and writers’ groups. After a while I recognised people’s names and even though we’d never met, Paula Harmon and I discovered we had much in common. Our styles differed but over time my Unicorns became friends with her dragons and we fell into the habit of reviewing and offering suggestions for improving each other’s work.
Despite living in different parts of the country, eventually we did meet and it was as if we had known each other for years. She assures me her story ‘Pen Friends,’ included in the book, is a work of fiction but I’ll leave you to make up your own mind how much is fact.
Around Christmas time the thought arose of combining our short stories into a book. We’re still not sure who first suggested it but fell naturally into Paula coming up with cover designs while I concentrated onto the organisation and layout. Despite driving her mad with ‘I like that but..’ version eight million and ninety two produced our fantastic cover and we are still on speaking terms.
After it was released we did have a brief discussion on how to spend our royalties. Should we invest in advertising? Employ a marketing agent? Facebook ads, Amazon ads, world tours, meetings with Hollywood directors to pitch for film rights?
OK, bottle of red, bottle of white and two cocktails it is then. Cheers.
This post might become a collector’s item. I hate having my photograph taken so this will be one of the very rare occasions you will see what I look like. 😀
